In the tradition of Hollywood’s finest awards presentations, the best stuntwomen and men in the entertainment industry will be recognized for their extraordinary performances in feature films of 2013.

  • Fast & Furious 6

    Description

    Two fights take place simultaneously in a subway station. One fight features 2 guys taking on a bad guy and the other fight features 2 women. Fights feature hand to hand combat, a crash through a glass pane, and a fall down the subway stairs.

    Description

    Hit Girl pretends to fight ninjas during a cheerleading audition. Using gymnastics and fighting techniques, she defeats the imaginary ninjas.

    Description

    Kick-Ass takes on a group of bad guys in an alley. All of the fight was done practically and no wires or CGI were used.

  • Parker

    Description

    Jason Statham fights an attacker in a Florida hotel room. The fight crashes through the bathroom and living room areas, resulting in hard knocks on a television, bathroom counters, and mirrors. The fight ends with the bad guy going over the balcony. This was done with a descender.

  • The Wolverine

    Description

    The Wolverine and Yukio take on assassins who are attacking a funeral. Hand to hand combat and gymnastic moves are used in most of the fight.

  • A Good Day to Die Hard

    Description

    Two men jump through a window and fall through construction and scaffolding to the ground. The first part of the jump was a 50’ high fall. The second part was done with wire decelerators to crash through breakaway scaffolding and fall 30’.

    Description

    A man is thrown from a 5th floor window with an electrical cord wrapped around his neck. Colin Ferrell then slides down the cord. This was done with a decelerator.

    Description

    Passengers sucked out of an airplane are saved by Iron Man. Skydivers were ratcheted out of a plane on a green screen stage. They then made parachute jumps from 14,000’ by using parachutes rigged as part of their costumes. They used their aerial skills to act out of control until Iron Man caught them.

  • The Hangover Part 3

    Description

    A man on the roof of Caesar’s Palace attempts to jump to a balcony using bed sheets. Three falls make up the stunt. The first fall is a 15’ fall while trying to grab the sheets. The second fall is another 15’ fall, landing in the letters of Caesar’s Palace. The final fall is a 20’ jump from the letters to a balcony railing. A harness was worn for all falls and the 3 rd fall was decreased in speed via decelerator rigging.

    Description

    A woman crashes through a window and falls to the ground. The 40’ fall was on a goldtail and she had some foam mats to break the fall.

  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation

    Description

    Ninjas fight with swords while ziplining on a cliff face. A combination of shots done on a real mountain and a large green screen wall were used. Ninjas were flying on 1000’ zip lines between mountain peaks. CGI was used to make the green screen wall look like the face of the mountain.

  • Iron Man 3

    Description

    After being flung from a plane mid-flight, 13 passengers are dropped safely in the water by Iron Man. The passengers and Iron Man travel from a height of approximately 100’ and a distance of 600’. They were dropped on a specific mark into the water at approximately 40 mph.

  • Oz the Great and Powerful

    Description

    The Wicked Witch gets on her broom, takes off through a crowd while doing an 80’ arc, then flies an additional 100’ off the set, reaching a top speed of close to 20 mph, all in one shot. The three dimensional flying arbor used for the stunt allowed the subject to rotate 180 degrees while maintaining an additional axis that controls or “puppets” the broom all at tremendous speeds. The “puppet” line took the broom from standing in a vertical position to a horizontal one as the Witch mounts the broom. The rotating feature allowed the Witch to point in the direction she was flying so that she could perform the sweeping arc.

  • The Hangover Part 3

    Description

    Man base jumps from the top of Caesar’s Palace and lands on a moving limo. For this two-part stunt, double high lines were rigged between a hotel roof and a crane and then between two cranes. The stunt double moved in the parachute rig and landed on the limo roof.

  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

    Description

    Magicians fall out of a plexi-glass box hanging mid-air. Safety lines were used, as the stunt was performed at height. The glass box was continuously being lowered from the crane arm, requiring constant adjustment on the lines. A descent rig was used to show one man falling on top of another.

  • The Lone Ranger

    Description

    Tonto and the Lone Ranger are snatched on a mail hook on the top of a moving train. They swing around, pick up a man and throw him through the train window. Stunt doubles were ratcheted from the top of the moving train, then suspended on a spinning rig to show the swing around the train. An overhead grid was suspended by 2 cranes that traveled with the stunt double and camera through the train window and out the other side. The stuntman was then ratcheted out the window of a moving train at 18mph and dropped to the ground.

Best work with a vehicle

  • A Good Day to Die Hard

    Description

    A MRAP (mine-resistant ambush protected) vehicle chases a van, followed by a Unimog vehicle, through crowded city streets. Highlights of the chase include head on driving, multiple crashes, and 90, 180, and 360 degree spins. The Unimog does a multi roll cannon roll and the MRAP jumps an overpass guardrail to land among live traffic. Chase ends with a Mercedes G Wagon doing a k-rail slide turnover and the MRAP doing a cannon roll, flying off a bridge and t-boning a big rig.

  • Fast & Furious 6

    Description

    Police cars are flipped by a specialty car. Police cars flipping sideways down the street are shot out of a special effects cannon. The driver of the specialty car had a handoperated lever which controlled rear hydraulic steering system so the car can crab over. The driver also drove head on at police cars with a pipe ramp attached to the front of the vehicle. Endo cannon was manned and pushed in the cannon car in front.

    Four BMWs are chased through the streets. Highlights of the chase include a sidewinder into a parked car, a cannon through a showroom, and a specialty car using a pipe ramp to turn over a BMW in a tunnel.

    Cars and motorcycles chase a tank on a highway. Highlights of the chase include a practical jeep endo cannon, a tank running over unmanned cars, a Mustang being pushed by the tank, motorcycles riding through traffic and transferring to a jeep, and 2 cars cannon rolling together.

    Description

    Vintage cars engage in a high speed chase at night on a dirt road. Retractable canons and a pipe ramp were used for turnovers and crashes. No CGI used and all driving was practical.

  • The Lone Ranger

    Description

    The Lone Ranger rides his horse on top of a moving train. Stunt was executed with stationary shipping containers to simulate the train cars. The containers were 16’ high and the horse was ridden over approximately 15 containers, jumping from one to the other. CGI was used to turn the containers into the moving train.

    Description

    An escaping bank robber is riding through a neighborhood on a motorcycle and does a laydown, just missing another car.

    Description

    A man is engulfed in fire and runs through a house chasing his friends. The stuntman did several full burns while chasing the actors. At one point he crashed through a railing and dropped 15’ to the floor below. A wire rig was used to decelerate his fall. CGI was only used for face replacement and all the fire was real.

    A woman jumps from a motorcycle to jeep and hangs on as the jeep drives erratically. A safety rig was used for the motorcycle to jeep transfer.

    Description

    A woman is thrown by a witch, crashing through a wall, falling to a roof, and then to the ground. After going through a breakaway wall, stuntwoman fell 8’ to the roof and then fell 9’ to face plant in a landing mat dug into the dirt.

  • Lone Survivor

    Description

    Four soldiers fall down a cliff. Broken up into multiple falls, each fall averaged about 10’ to 15’ in height and length. The only location using pads was the initial drop in the 2nd fall. They dropped 50’ down a 70 degree rock face to a platform covered with boxes covered with pads. No wires or CGI were used to enhance the sequence.

    Description

    A man is swung by the Lone Ranger and Tonto and tossed through a train. He lands hard on the other side of the train. He was ratcheted out of the moving train at 18 mph and dropped about 6’ to the ground.
