The winners of the 2017 Taurus World Stunt Awards were announced on Saturday, May 13, 2017 during a presentation at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, California. Stunt men and women from around the world honored their peers for a year of outstanding work in feature films.
The films Captain America: Civil War and Hacksaw Ridge were the big winners for the night. Captain America: Civil War won 4 awards, garnering Taurus awards in the Best High Work, Best Stunt Rigging, Best Overall Stunt by a Stunt Woman, and Hardest Hit categories. The film was nominated 6 times and featured winning stunts ranging from a fight between Black Widow and two mercenaries to Captain America being blown out of a 3rd story window. Hacksaw Ridge won 3 Taurus awards in the Best Fight, Best Specialty Stunt, and Best Stunt Coordination and/or 2nd Unit Direction categories. The thrilling car chase through the streets of Las Vegas, featured in the film Jason Bourne, won the award for Best Work with a Vehicle. Alarm für Cobra 11: Cobra, übernehmen Sie!, a film from Germany, took home the Taurus for Best Action in a Foreign Film.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Gene LeBell, a talented stuntman and stunt coordinator. Known as “The Toughest Man Alive” or “Judo Gene”, Gene started his career as a student, practitioner, and instructor of the martial arts. From there, he segued into professional wrestling, as a wrestler, businessman, and broadcaster on KTLA and eventually took his talents to film and television as a stuntman. Gene’s career has spanned over 50 years, with credits from The Beverly Hillbillies, Starsky and Hutch, and The Green Hornet. Gene continues to mentor and teach up and coming stunt performers.
