2011 taurus world stunt awards - Winners & Nominees

In the tradition of Hollywood’s finest awards presentations, the best stuntwomen and men in the entertainment industry will be recognized for their extraordinary performances in feature films of 2010.

Best Fight

  • Expendables

    Description

    Sylvester Stallone and his friends fight a group of bad guys in underground tunnels using various MMA moves, submission holds, knife techniques, gun fire and breakaway props. The floor and various spots were padded to achieve some of the more violent impacts. Also a CGI element was used when the knives were thrown.

  • Inception

    Description

    Two men fight in a hallway and attempt to reach a gun as the hallway is spinning. Two sets, each 110’ long, were built for this fight. One set was vertical and the other was horizontal. The vertical set was used for a decender fall. The horizontal set was used for the other part of the fight. A tracking ratchet was also used. Both stuntmen were fighting without wires for most of the scene.

    Description

    Two men reenact the real boxing match between Mickey Ward and Sheay Neary. All hits were real and as controlled as possible to achieve a realistic fight.

  • The Killers

    Description

    Two men fight in a kitchen and living room. Stunt doubles and actors performed in this fight. A wire was used to simulate one of the performers crashing through the banister, getting his shirt hung up momentarily on the broken banister and then dropping to a table below. Doubles also crashed through a breakaway French window and onto a practical table, dragging the curtains with them.

    Description

    A man and woman fight in an office, using desks, walls and glass doors to their advantage. The fight was a combination of doubles and actors. Stunt doubles were pulled through drywall and crashed through the wall.

Best High Work

  • Inception

    Description

    Stuntmen are rigged to the side of a snowy cliff. The stuntmen were cabled on 200’ from the top. Both stuntman free fall 50’ using a gold tail decelerator

  • Machete

    Description

    A man runs and jumps out of a 5th story glass window and using intestines as a rope, swings out till the line is tight, and swings back thru the 4th story glass window. This was done all in the same shot. The stunt was done using a reverse ratchet playing out slack as the stuntman ran thru and jumped out of the tempered glass and swung back thru the lower tempered glass window. No CGI was used for this stunt.

  • Predators

    Description

    Five people tumble and fall down a steep hill about 100’ and end up going over an 80’ cliff and freefall into the water. No CGI was used for this stunt.

  • The A-Team

    Description

    Stuntmen rappel down the side of two 400’ office buildings. This stunt was performed on two different buildings using winches to simulate the rappels. Crashing through the windows was done on a stage.

    Description

    Two police officers jump off a high rise building. Stunt doubles used a 130′ descender for the fall. The impact was done in studio and with CGI.

Best work with a vehicle

  • Date Night

    Description

    A taxicab and Audi are locked together after a head on collision and race thru streets, weaving in and out of cars. The two cars are chased thru the streets by cops and bad guys doing near misses, slides, sideswipes and a 360-degree spin. The cars were partly chained together for some shots including the 360-degree spin. For the sideswipes, the cars were on the same chassis being driven from both ends with two stunt drivers. For most shots, a single, blind driver drove the cars through traffic. CGI is used to show the actor in a vehicle as it is t-boned.

    Description

    A pick up truck and Trans Am chase each other around a housing development. The two cars go through construction sites while sliding and banging into each other.

  • The Other Guys

    Description

    Two police officers chase bad guys though the streets of New York City. The ending of the chase features a car that crashes into a double decker bus. The bus then does a skid and sends the car crashing into a building. A cable rig pulled the car into the building. The stunt was done real and CGI was used to make the building look like a building in New York. CGI was used to enhance the fire explosion but the fire was real.

  • The Other Guys

    Description

    A Prius chases bad guys in a van. To allow drifting, the Prius was altered with a V8 engine but the stunt was entirely practical. The van also slams into a parked car. This was done all practical and the chassis was reversed on its frame for the van that hits the parked car.

  • The Town

    Description

    A mini van races thru the streets of Boston pursued by the Boston police. They drive down back alleys and side streets, weaving in and out of traffic, causing various slides, fender benders and near misses. Using a new vehicle, the bank robbers continue the chase while attempting to cross a bridge.

Best speciality stunt

  • Inception

    Description

    A red car does a 180-degree spin and a 90-degree slide, weaving thru traffic. The car then does another 90-degree slide, hitting a car and knocking a bad guy down. A taxi backs up pinning the bad guy between two cars, pushing him backwards. The cab breaks free as it does a reverse 180-degree spin and drives off.

  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

    Description

    A man uses elements of free running and acrobatics to avoid being captured by an army of guards. The chase takes them from a market place to the rooftops and used minimal wire work and CGI. Wires were used in a wall flip at the beginning of the chase as well as a wall run along posts. The exterior shots had some safety lines used but the jumps were performed unassisted. Several of the jumps were large gaps between two high buildings with a large drop in between. Once the main character jumps back into the interiors of the buildings there is some gold tail assistance.

    Description

    A helicopter flies into a netted golf range surrounded by 100’ tall nets. The golf course was at the end of a pier. All the flying was done live but the crash was digital.

  • True Grit

    Description

    Ned Pepper’s horse is shot out from under him and falls to the ground with him. The stunt was done as the horse was stationary. The ground was dug up a little to protect the horse and stuntman. No CGI was used for this stunt.

Best overall stunt by a stunt woman

  • Alice in Wonderland

    Description

    Alice falls through the rabbit hole. In the first part of the stunt, a stuntwoman falls 20’ through a 2 ½’ opening to a porta pit. In the second part of the stunt, a she is on wires, falls 25’ to an Aussie trampoline and bounces to a porta pit. In the third part of the stunt, a stuntwoman jumps 20’ thru a breakaway ceiling onto porta pits. Then, the stuntwoman was hung 12’ on a quick release, cut away to a curved set piece and hit a floor with no padding. CGI was used throughout the sequence of falls and landings.

    Description

    A nurse and hospital patient are set on fire. A stunt woman in the hospital bed does a full burn, as the stunt hospital nurse does a ¾ partial burn running out of the room. The burn lasted 6 seconds. A small amount of CGI was used to add fire to the room.

    Description

    Freddy Krueger tosses a woman around a bedroom. The stuntwoman was rigged to move around the room like a puppet. None of the walls were padded and everything she hit was practical. CGI was used to erase cables and input the ceiling.

    A woman is tossed into a bedroom wall. The stuntwoman does a 12’ ratchet to a practical wall that was not padded. She falls onto a table and then the floor, which had a 1” pad. CGI was used to remove the cable.

    Description

    Angelina Jolie evades federal offices by jumping through traffic. A stuntwoman jumps from a moving big rig to a gas truck. Using wires, the stuntwoman then jumps onto the top of a box truck and almost slides off the side of the truck. When the truck makes a hard brake, she rolls off the truck. All of the vehicles were moving at speed.

  • Grown Ups

    Description

    A man holds on to a rope swing too long and hits a tree. The stuntman’s 10’ fall used a goldtail decelerator. A capstan winch and porta pits were used for the final fall and landing. CGI was used to erase the cable.

    Description

    While chasing the lead character over rooftops, a guard falls short jumping between two buildings. He hits the corner of the building with his rib cage and falls.

    Description

    A man is trying to jump start a van when he is shocked and hits the hood and van. As the spark effect went off, a stuntman was yanked up 6’ by a two man hand pull until his rotation was complete. He then landed on the hood, was released and fell to the ground. No pads were used and CGI erased the cable.

    Description

    A motorcyclist is hit on the head with a helmet and crashes into a parked car. The only CGI was the helmet that was thrown at the motorcyclist.

  • Expendables

    Description

    A pier is doused with gas and explodes with all the bad guys on it. This was shot multiple times. First, stuntmen do various partial burns and hand ratchets send them flying off pier while fire is all around them. Next is a wide shot of the entire pier blowing up with no stuntmen on the pier. No CGI was used.

    A man is shot with an arrow and he is set on fire. The stuntman does a ¾ burn. He was wearing a silicone hood with an open face, and all protective gear with gel. The fuel on him was glue and CGI was used for the arrows.
