In the tradition of Hollywood’s finest awards presentations, the best stuntwomen and men in the entertainment industry will be recognized for their extraordinary performances in feature films of 2020.

Best Fight

  • Avengement

    Description

    A man takes on a gang single-handedly in a pub. The fighters use knives, cricket bats, guns, bottles, and a crow bar, while throwing each other into furniture and walls. A hand pull was used at the start of the fight, when the man uses a shot gun on one of the gang members. After this point, no wires were used.

  • Captain Marvel

    Description

    Captain Marvel fights an alien who has morphed into an old lady on a train. Fighting in the narrow space of the train, they spin around seats and push each other into passengers. The alien then changes into a man and the fight moves to the top of the train. Movement and fighting were done practically, using wire assists. A gimble was used for the movement of the train.

    Description

    Jason Statham fights a group of men in a dark house. They crash into furniture, glass walls, counters, and bathroom fixtures and use props like a toaster, sawed off shot gun, pots, and pans.

  • John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

    Description

    John Wick and a woman engage in a fight in the streets of Morocco. The actors and stunt performers take out guards with guns, knives, judo, hand to hand combat, and attack dogs.

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

    Description

    Three home invaders enter a home and a fight ensues. A stunt woman has a can of dog food thrown at her face, causing her to fall flat. A Pit bull attacks a stunt man and then is called off and sent to attack the woman who is still lying on the ground. The two men proceed to fight hand to hand, with the male intruder being finished off by having his head stomped on. The second woman then attacks the man but he smashes her face around the room, including a telephone and a wall. A dummy was used for the hits to the mantle and death blows. After the dog releases her, the first stunt woman runs through a glass door and ends up in a pool. She is then set on fire with a flame thrower. No CGI was used.

    Description

    A stunt performer runs down the side of a church dome, along a ledge 100’ in the air, and jumps from rooftop to rooftop 100’ in the air. The first half of the run down the side of the dome was real, with safety lines in case he fell, and the second half of the slide down the dome was CGI.

    Description

    Using parkour techniques, stunt performers run across rooftops and ledges, and jump from building to building to escape capture. One performer then grabs a cable to a sign high above ground on the side of a building. The cable snaps and he swings out and back toward the building, grabbing hold of the edge of a statue and a piece of pipe. He loses his grip and falls through several canopies, through a roof, and then to the ground, landing beside a spiral staircase. A high speed winch was used for safety and to control his descent and landing.

    Description

    A man free falls from a tower that is in the atmosphere. The sequence is performed in two parts. The first part is a 20’ fall using a descender, which was tested by a stunt performer but ultimately performed by the actor. The second part is comprised of six practical skydives from 13,000’ in a space suit and helmet that provided limited visibility. The canopy flight and intentional parachute crash landing were performed practically. Debris and damage to the parachute were CGI but no wires were used for the skydive and landing.

    Description

    A stuntwoman scales an 80’ hot air balloon at a height of 2500’. The action was captured from a helicopter, while the stuntwoman intentionally slipped and fell on the balloon. The actress did close up shots on a stage with blue screen backgrounds and face replacement was used for the fall from the balloon.

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

    Description

    In a Western town set, a man is shot on top of a roof and falls 12’ from the peak of the roof, breaking through a balcony. He continues to fall an additional 10’ to the porch. A catcher was used stop his body for the final impact, allowing him to be safe and still visible above the porch line. No wires or CGI were used.

Best stunt rigging

    Description

    Stunt performers are on a ship that has a magnetic device connected to it. When activated, the stunt performers’ bulletproof vests and guns are pulled from one side of the ship to the other and then back again. This was done practical. All stunt performers were attached to a wire and they were pulled with high-speed winches and pneumatic ratchets. Performers were decelerated upon impact and performers were held into place by wires to simulate the magnetic field holding them in position. Special pads were integrated into the side of the ship to help protect the performers. CGI was only used for some debris flying through the air.

    Description

    Drones attack the Presidential entourage at a lakeside location and set off explosions, causing stunt performers to go flying. Multiple rigs and ratchets were done in synchronization with large scale special effects. Some stunt performers are sent through fire, do a fire burn, or land in water while on a ratchet.

  • Jumanji: The Next Level

    Description

    A group of heroes are making their way across rope and plank bridges when they are attacked by CGI mandrills. The group runs across, jumps, and falls off bridges in the chase. The running, jumping, and grabbing mid-swing are practical and done on set with wire rigs on the performers.

  • Shazam!

    Description

    Stunt performers are in a vertically suspended bus that is tipping over the edge of a bridge. As the bus begins to slide over the edge and jolts, three stunt performers are individually dropped and decelerated from the rear of the bus, falling over seats, down the aisles, crashing into poles, and landing on the windshield.

  • Spiderman: Far From Home

    Description

    Spiderman attempts to rescue a group in Venice. He jumps from pole to pole, up onto a bridge, and is eventually hit by a wave of water. This was performed by both the actor and stunt double. A high line and high speed winch were used to move the actor and double over 200’ across the poles. CGI was used to enhance the water and for wire removal.

    Description

    A car chase through the streets of Florence. The chase features a crash into a farmers market, multiple car hits, driving through narrow alleys, and multiple motorcycle crashes. All driving was done practical.

  • Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

    Description

    The three lead characters are in a McLaren, evading motorcyclists in the streets of London. The McLaren and the motorcycles weave through traffic and onto sidewalks. Motorcycles do wheelies, ride over cars, and crash into passing vehicles. CGI was used for the McLaren and motorcycle sliding under a semi-truck and as the motorcycle crashes into a double decker bus, ending the chase.

    Description

    A driver competes in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Taking place over the course of a day, the driver must navigate rain and wet roads at night and other cars during the entire race. Cars crash on the course, into each other, and the sides of the speedway.

  • Gemini Man

    Description

    A man is attacked by his clone, who is on a motorbike. Using the bike as a weapon, the clone does a 180 degree stop to attack the man. The clone also slides the motorcycle underneath a stunt performer who does a push up to elevate himself above the rear tire, as the tire sweeps underneath the stunt performer. Wires, face replacement, and a split screen were all used to achieve this sequence.

  • Terminator: Dark Fate

    Description

    A woman is driving a pick-up truck to evade a Terminator who is driving a super-sized construction truck with a scoop with teeth. The Terminator’s truck crashes into other vehicles, a taco truck and outdoor seating, and freeway railings. The chase makes its way onto a freeway, as the woman drives the pick-up truck in reverse up an on-ramp. On the freeway, the Terminator continues to crash into other vehicles and rear end the pick-up truck. All driving was done practical.

    Description

    A stunt pilot does aerobatics in a plane. He skims the water of a lake and takes the plane into a vertical climb. All of the flying was real and CGI was used for face replacement.

    Description

    A stunt performer is being chased and jumps from one I-beam to another in the middle of a construction site. This was done practical with a safety line in case of a fall. CGI was used to add the city below the I-beams.

  • The Courier

    Description

    A man is ratcheted back from a car explosion, while doing a full body burn. The performer had a small pyro bag detonate in front of him and was pulled back approximately 18’ by a nitrogen ram while doing a full body burn. The car explosion was shot separately and put together with the shot of the ratchet and burn. CGI added more flames since the performer’s wig came off during the stunt and showed his silicone mask.

    Description

    Stunt performers, dressed as Nazis, perform a simultaneous full fire burn. A man uses a flame thrower and ignites the performers, continuing to sweep back and forth across them as they burn. Through multiple takes, each burn was approximately 12 seconds. This was all practical with no CGI.

    A stunt woman is charged by a Pit bull. The dog launches and latches onto her arm. She is then thrown around the room through most of the sequence, thrashing wildly while the dog continued its attack. This was all practical with no CGI.

    Description

    A woman jumps and grabs a chandelier to avoid a flood of water surging behind her. The chandelier breaks and she falls 10’ into the rushing water, being washed through a building and out the window of a high rise. As she is swept out the window, she grabs a window support and swings out and around, and back into the building. She kicks the feet out from underneath one of her attackers, causing him to fall and be swept out the window by the rushing water. CGI was used to enhance the city around the building and for cable removal.

She is then thrown around the room through most of the sequence, thrashing wildly while the dog continued its attack. After being released by the dog, she runs through a glass door, smashing to the ground. From there, she stumbles into a pool. A man then uses a flame thrower and ignites her. She continues to burn after the flame thrower is disengaged, flailing until she falls forward into the water. The flame thrower was on her for 8-10 seconds and she continued to burn as long as possible before extinguishing herself underwater. This was all practical with no CGI.

    Description

    A man comes to help another man in the middle of the street, as a police car approaches. They are both hit by the police car simultaneously, going up on the hood and falling to the pavement.

    Description

    Two factory workers are taking a smoke break when a co-worker commits suicide by jumping off the roof, landing on a car behind them. The stunt performer did a back fall from 15’ above the car off a lift. No wires or CGI were used.

    Description

    To end a fight, a stuntman is suplexed onto a rock. The rock was a set piece with a thin layer of padding and CGI was used for facial replacement.

    The Joker is being chased by detectives and runs into traffic. He is hit by a taxi, going up on the hood and top of the car, before falling to the ground.
